The increase in extreme weather events and rising sea levels are unmistakable signs of climate change. Roughly 850 million people still live without access to electricity, which is the foundation of sustainable development.
How Does Solar System Work?
1. Solar Panels: Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells, typically made from silicon. When sunlight (photons) hits these cells, they generate a flow of electrons, creating an electric current. This phenomenon is known as the photovoltaic effect.
2. Inverter: The direct current (DC) electricity generated by the solar panels is not suitable for most household appliances, which run on alternating current (AC). Therefore, an inverter is used to convert the DC electricity from the panels into AC electricity that can be used in your home.
3. Electrical Panel: The AC electricity produced by the inverter is sent to your electrical panel, where it can be distributed throughout your home to power lights, appliances, and other electrical devices.
4. Net Metering (Optional): If your system produces more electricity than you need at any given time, the excess can be fed back into the grid through a metering system. In many places, you can receive credits for this surplus electricity, which can offset electricity costs when your solar panels aren’t producing enough power (such as at night). This is available in some areas of the Philippines. Ask your power provider.
5. Monitoring System: Many solar systems also include a monitoring system that allows you to track the performance of your panels and the amount of electricity generated. This helps you optimize your energy usage and identify any issues with your system.
6. Battery Storage (Optional): Some solar systems include batteries to store excess electricity generated during the day for use during periods of low sunlight or at night. This can further reduce reliance on the grid and provide backup power during outages.
Overall, a solar system harnesses sunlight through photovoltaic technology to produce clean, renewable electricity for residential, commercial, or industrial use, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based electricity generation.
How to Save Money
1. Lower Electricity Bills: By generating your own electricity from solar panels, you can reduce your reliance on the grid. This can significantly lower your monthly electricity bills, or eliminate it completely, especially if your solar system generates more electricity than you use, allowing you to sell excess power back to the grid (net metering. available in some areas of the Philippines, ask your power provider).
2. Return on Investment: While the initial cost of installing solar panels can be significant, they typically pay for themselves over time through electricity savings. Many solar panel systems have a lifespan of 25 years or more, during which they can continue to generate free electricity.
3. Protection Against Rising Energy Costs: Solar energy provides a hedge against future electricity price increases. Once you’ve installed solar panels, your energy costs are largely fixed (aside from maintenance costs), shielding you from fluctuations in utility rates. This is most important because the cost of energy/electricity will only keep on rising!
4. Increased Property Value: Homes with solar panel systems are often valued higher than similar homes without them. This can be advantageous if you decide to sell your home in the future. While not increasing your property value, you may decide to take your solar system with you to your new house!
5. Environmental Benefits: While not directly saving you money, using solar energy reduces your carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a cleaner environment. Some jurisdictions also offer additional incentives for environmentally friendly energy sources.
Overall, while the initial investment can be a high, the long-term financial benefits of solar energy typically outweigh the costs for many homeowners and businesses.
